We left Georgetown on March 27 and sailed to Calabash
Bay on Long Island, where we spent a very rolly night anchored with two other
boats. We left at first light, as soon as we could steer around coral
heads to safely depart the anchorage. The wind was blowing 20 to 25 knots from the
ENE and we decided to stop for the night in Hawks' Nest on Cat Island, 27 miles
away.
Unfortunately, we did not take into consideration the fact that there was an
astronomically low low tide and we went aground in the very narrow
channel. After a few futile tries to get in, we decided not to fool with
Mother Nature and to wait for the
tide to rise. We made it into the marina around 2 pm and stayed for 2
days, taking advantage of the free wi-fi and cleaning the salt off the boat.
From Hawks' Nest Creek, it was a short hop to West Bay
on Little San Salvador (or Half Moon Bay, as it has been renamed by its' new owner, Carnival Cruise
Lines). We spent a very restful night there before embarking the next
morning on an overnight sail to the Abacos. At ten o'clock the next
morning, we were slowly sailing through the cut at Man-O-War Cay into the Sea of
Abaco. Tom, on the s/v Precept gave us some great advice and we anchored
in front of Matt Lowe's Cay for the night.
We are now in Marsh Harbor, taking care of chores and
catching up with some old friends, and looking forward to our rendezvous with
family.
