After an overnight sail from Tortuga with 15 knots of wind from the
northeast, we arrived in daylight at the entrance to the Los Roques
archipelago. We would never want to do this entry in the dark. In
the daylight, it requires one's full attention. We picked a
point midway between the prominent red and white striped Sebastopol lighthouse
and the end of a long reef and surfed on fairly large waves into the
calm water behind the reef. It felt good to anchor the boat and rest up
and organize ourselves a bit before going on into Gran Roques, the main
settlement in this reef enclosed national park.
The sail from the anchorage at Buchiyaco, between the
inner and the outer reefs, required attention, but there was plenty of deep
water and a wide channel between the reefs and shoals. With 15-20 knots of
wind coming across the reefs, we had a very pleasant 12 mile sail to the harbor
at Gran Roques, where we checked in with the authorities.
