We left Rodney Bay on St. Lucia at 3:30 am on March 1
and set sail for Bequia. With a nice 15 knot wind on our port quarter, we
cruised easily down the coast of St. Lucia, past Marigot Bay and the
Pitons. As we passed the southern tip of St. Lucia, the wind and waves
came forward of the beam and we had a romping ride across the 30 miles of open
ocean between St. Lucia and St. Vincent.
Once in the lee of St. Vincent, we again had some
smooth sailing along the very mountainous, green and beautiful island.
Clouds enshrouded the tips of the mountains and we passed through a brief, hard
squall with 30 knot winds, after which the sun poked through once again.
We did not stop at St. Vincent, although it was tempting, but continued on to
our destination in Bequia. The 25 mile sail across the open ocean between
St. Vincent and Bequia was a beam reach during which we averaged 7 knots - an
exhilarating sail.
We arrived in Bequia at 5 pm and anchored near the Tony
Gibbons Beach in a very pleasant setting. The island looks very inviting
and we look forward to exploring it before moving on to the Tobago Cays.
