Land Ho! At 8:40 this a.m. we could look toward the
west and just barely see the outline of two mountains lying under the cloud
bank. What a grand sight. We sat in the cockpit having breakfast,
congratulating each other. After 3 solid weeks of living in a small space,
moving day and night, and carrying out even normal, every day tasks that are
made difficult by the movement of the boat, it will be good to finally make
landfall. We know from experience that our first night in a bunk that does
not move up and down and side to side will be spent in a restless sleep.
Our brains and semicircular ear canals will take a little time to adapt to a
steady platform again. And we will miss being out on the water.
We had a beautiful crossing. Last night, we
thanked Herb for helping us with it, as his very accurate forecasting helped to
route us around some bad weather and we never had more than a couple of days of
really light air. We were fortunate enough to have solid trade winds at
least half of the way across and intermittently in the last half of the
trip. Even when we only had 10-15 knots of wind, the sailing was
beautiful.
We will make landfall this afternoon and will anchor in
front of the Hotel Caritan in St. Anne's, where our friend and Garry's wife,
Lorraine, will be arriving late tonight. We will clear customs tomorrow
morning, staying on the boat under the yellow quarantine flag until then.
Customs at Martinique is free and is open seven days a week but only in the
morning. Tomorrow's report will be sent from the anchorage at Martinique.
C'est magnifique!
All's well on board-
Tom, Peg and Garry
