Photo: Tom & Garry on deck to set the drifter for a light air
reach
In light air, every sail we have gets pulled out of the
sail locker and hoisted and doused several times. At one time or another, we
reached on white sails, with all of them up on our cutter-rigged vessel; we
sailed wing-on-wing on both jibes; we sailed with 2 head sails and no main sail;
and we got the drifter out to reach for a while. The only sail we have not
had up yet is the asymmetrical spinnaker. In spite of all the activity, we had
another slow day. Tonight, however, the wind should pick up to 15-20 knots
and continue into tomorrow and Monday.
Tom is thinking about going for a swim to inspect the
bottom of the boat. But he's also thinking about a report on the net from
the sail boat, Pagos, who had 3 lures, on 200-lb test monofilament line taken by
sharks yesterday. Garry and Peg suggested he trust that the bottom is okay
and that he spritz off in the cockpit shower if he really just wants to cool
down.
At 5pm yesterday, we spotted a sail on the horizon
about 5 miles away to the northwest of us. We called him on the VHF radio
and found that the boat was a 16 meter sailing vessel named "Green
Flash" with a German couple, Ulf & Monika, on board, bound for
Martinique also. We exchanged weather information and invited him to check
in with the informal Atlantic Crossing Net on 8104, which they have done.
We're always amazed when we "meet" another boat on the ocean this way.
All's well on board-
Tom, Peg and Garry
