You may notice a little discrepancy in the
"distance to go" that we post everyday. The mileage noon to noon
is exactly what we've done, but the distance to Martinique may vary, because we
change course to avoid weather, to make the boat more comfortable for the crew,
and to get the best wind. Yesterday, we were aiming a little high to stay
in the wind. This morning, we looked at a weather report, called a grib
file, that showed very light winds 2 days from now at latitude 17 degrees.
We decided that if make a gradual turn to the south west toward latitude 15, we
might be able to avoid the 10 knots of wind that has been forecast for Monday
and Tuesday for latitude 17. We had been white-sail reaching to get a
little high, but this morning, armed with more weather information, we poled out
the yankee to weather and put out a bit more main sail. We are now sailing
toward the southwest, aiming for about 15N 40W. Tonight we'll check in
with Southbound II to see if he approves. We've had no squalls yet today,
but we may get them tonight.
We went through a time zone today and added an hour to
our day. When we left the Canaries, local time was UTC time. We are
now UTC-1. We are keeping our clocks on UTC, however, because everything
we do is reported in UTC, not local time. We'll change our clocks when we
get to Martinique, where it should be UTC-3 - we think.
In spite of the big waves and rocking, rolling motion
of the boat, none of us has even a hint of seasickness now. Garry is
wearing his Transderm Scop patch and will continue to do so. He's afraid
to test out whether he needs it or not and feels there is no future in messing
with something that works.
All's well on board-
