The wind has eased a bit to 20 knots and the seas are still about 3
meters. Herb has advised us that there will be a trough along latitude 18 westward
from 30 W and we have adjusted our course to go south of the trough to avoid the
squally weather and high winds. The air temperature has increased an
average of 10 degrees. It's even warmer at night now, so we don't have to
wear every warm item of clothing that we have with us.
We are unbelievably busy on the boat. Tom and
Garry regularly check for chafe in the lines and other equipment. We've
had to make several sail changes as we move along. We check into the radio
nets
4 times a day and we retrieve and send weather and emails several times a
day. Cooking and cleaning up requires time, planning and physical agility,
and we've decided that we can get by very well with brunch and dinner, rather
than 3 squares. And we have lots of projects going on. Garry
installed a sea-water pump to save on water, using the sea water to wash dishes
and giving them a rinse in clear water. Tom got the water maker working,
but we still conserve water on board. We constantly reposition items in
the cupboards, padding them so that they don't rattle and disturb sleeping crew.
We try to keep the boat tidy with a place for everything and everything in it's
place, since items that are not secured get tossed by the movement of the
boat. And lots more! We've had very little time for just sitting
back and reading.
We have set a watch schedule exactly similar to the one
we used when we came over in 1999. Peg takes the 9-12 watch, Tom takes
12-3, Garry takes 3-6am and Peg is back on from 6am-9am. The rest of the
day is catch a nap as we can or as we need it.
All's well on board-
Tom, Peg and Garry
