It was another wild and wooly night with winds of 25-plus knots and 3
meter waves, broad reaching under reefed main and yankee. We are using the
tried and true strategy of following the coast of Africa south toward the Cape
Verde Islands, taking advantage of the prevailing northerly winds, and turning westward to find the NE trade winds at about 20N
30W. This is the route that Columbus recommended 500 years ago. It is the
classic trade route and has remained unchanged since Columbus's time.
This morning we started to turn westerly toward our
waypoint at 20N 30W and are now sailing with the yankee poled out, wing-on-wing
in front of a 20 knot easterly wind. The motion of the boat has smoothed out and
things are more comfortable on board. Everyone is up, taking nourishment
and smiling.
We're checking into 3 radio nets: an informal group
of transatlantic crossers on 8104 at 1015 and 1815 utc; Trudi's Maritime
Mobile net out of
Barbados on 21400 at 1300 utc; and Southbound II on 12359 at 2000 utc to
listen to our weather guru, Herb Hilgenberg.
All's well on board-
