Photo:  Starboard Home on the hard ready for new whale stripe

Jobs done on Starboard Home prior to cruising in 2002:

1 - Replaced the plumbing under the galley sink.

2 - Had 2 new heavier gauge, stainless steel water tanks         fabricated, increasing the number of baffles in each one to prevent sloshing, and installed them.  This was necessary after Tom traced rusty water in the bilge to faulty seams in our 16-year old tanks.  He also reduced the size of each tank by 6 and 9 gallons to increase the amount of storage available to us under the settee.

3 - Arranged to have the whale stripe repainted, the lettering redone, the cap rail stripped and given 6 coats of Cetol, and the old caulking removed and a new seal completed in the joint between the rail and the hull.

        4 - Installed a World Satellite Radio

5 - Had stainless steel pieces fabricated and then installed:

bulletplate to protect wood from abrasion of anchor chain
bulletprotective treads on wood where we climb over the bow when bow to the quay
bulletprotective piece on the eyebrow where dinghy is secured
bulletadaptor for mounting bracket for stern anchor to be carried on the monitor for easy deployment.  We rarely use the monitor for steering in the Mediterranean
bulletpiece to mount blocks for the monitor lines, to replace the previous unit which was made of painted aluminum and corroded
bulletstanchion mount on stern pulpit to replace a broken one
bullettangs for preventer and backstay
bulletclevis pins for shrouds

6 - Reran the lead from the Ham radio tuner to the back stay

7 - Provided direct, independent power feed to the Ham radio

8 - Replaced some of the copper grounding strap

9 - Picked up chain that had been regalvanized over the winter.

10- Gave the batteries their annual bath and performed battery tests.

11- Cleaned up, repainted and replaced a mounting base on a propane tank.

12- Put a vent in the coolant supply for refrigeration system to prevent airlock.

13- Applied antifouling to fiberglass and metal on boat bottom.

        14- Replaced zincs

15- Waxed topsides and applied teflon polish to deck surfaces.

16- Went up the mast to wax mast, clean shrouds and check fittings and lights.

        17- Polished the stainless steel

18- Modified the sunshade to reduce the number of poles needed to deploy.

19- Touch up white paint on topsides where needed (mostly on the bow).

20- All engine maintenance, including draining water and junk from the bottom of the fuel system, restuffing the packing gland, checking the oil.

21- Completely cleaned interiors and all lockers

22- Varnished all screens, some of the cabinetry below, and the companionway stairs.

23- Applied 3 coats of Cetol to the eyebrow around the cabin top and hatches, and touched up handrails and cockpit wood.

24- Fixed a leaky seal in the head.

25- Checked out the refrigeration and the air-conditioning systems.

Is there anybody out there who still wants to go cruising?  We are finally ready!

For now!
